M1 MPRI (at ENS Paris-Saclay)

The Paris Master’s in Computer Science Research trains future researchers in theoretical computer science through intensive exposure to contemporary computer science research. It is open to students holding a bachelor’s degree or equivalent from a French or foreign university. Most MPRI graduates go on to pursue a Ph.D., although some students successfully enter the workforce after completing their master’s degree.

The MPRI is jointly organized by the following institutions: Université de Paris Cité (coordinating institution), the École normale supérieure PSL (now ENS Ulm), the École normale supérieure de Paris-Saclay (ENS Paris-Saclay), the Institut Polytechnique de Paris (including École Polytechnique and Télécom Paris). In addition, the master’s program maintains close ties with the following universities and research organizations: Sorbonne University (SU), CNRS, INRIA, and CEA.

Disciplinary Reinforcement

Students must take courses that reinforce their knowledge of general computer science (compilation, software engineering, security) and their programming skills.

Disciplinary Specialization

A wide range of specialization courses is offered either within the department or at MPRI partner institutions (primarily ENS Ulm). These courses cover algorithms (distributed systems, bioinformatics), complexity, formal languages, automatic deduction, cryptography, program logic and semantics, and system analysis and verification.

Research Practice

An introductory research workshop is required to complete the year, as is a research internship abroad.

Completion

To complete the first year of the MPRI, École Normale students must either (long internship option) earn 30 ECTS in coursework and 30 ECTS, or (short internship option) earn 45 ECTS in coursework and 15 ECTS from an internship (2.5 months).

Continuation of Studies

The natural progression from the first year is the second year of the MPRI.

Other master’s programs are available upon application, after the study plan has been approved by the department:
